Contenido | The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights' educational activities aim at propagating knowledge of civil and human rights, at overcoming the stereotypes rooted in society under the communist regime, and at teaching the legal means of protection to which people may resort if their rights are violated.
Public education is provided through the media: the press, television, and radio. A number of professional journals, as well as the daily Rzeczpospolita, regularly publish articles written by members of the Helsinki Committee that comment on the current decisions of the European Commission of Human Rights, European Court of Human Rights, and the United Nations Human Rights Committee in Geneva.
In 1992 and 1993, the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights prepared thirteen half-hour films for television on the history and philosophy of human rights, constitutionalism, and international systems of human rights protection.
In 1993, the Helsinki Foundation ran a periodical television feature, in which its representatives discussed current events in Poland based on specific cases, which incited a broader discussion on constitutional rights and freedoms.
In 1994-1996, in cooperation with public television, the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights prepared eleven educational films introducing issues of human rights. The first ten of them were broadcast on Channel 1 of Polish Television; they are also distributed on videocassette. English and Russian language versions were prepared as well.
In 1996-1997, the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights produced six educational packets under the common title, "How to Protect Human Rights?" Each packet consists of a video film, an information script for teachers, and suggested lesson plans. The subjects covered in the packets deal with domestic and international procedures. At the same time, the Helsinki Foundation produced five television films on the limits of different human rights and freedoms.
As for radio, in 1992, the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights prepared and broadcast fifteen ten-minute radio broadcasts on human rights and freedoms in five languages: Polish, Russian, Belorussian, Ukrainian, and Lithuanian.
Furthermore, every year representatives of the Helsinki Foundation take part in over one hundred radio and television features, commenting on various events from the viewpoint of human rights and explaining a variety of related problems. The representatives also participate in many public meetings, explaining issues related to human rights.
On the occasion of Polish and regional events of importance for human rights, statements of the Helsinki Committee are published that also perform an educational function. | |
